Milk crates are the ultimate answer to those with home storage needs. They really take up very little space when stacked. They can also be cleverly transformed into any type of furniture imaginable. They are amazing, sturdy little boxes that should be part of any home.
The average milk crate is thirteen inches long, thirteen inches wide, and eleven inches high. If you can find a bunch of uniform milk crates, they can stack pretty high in a corner. They do not exactly lock together, but they stay fairly sturdy when piled. You can lift off a bunch of crates at a time to easily get to any crate in a stack. They can also be placed on shelves as shelf dividers or drawers for extra storage.
Toy Storage Drawers
We use milk crates as the base of our kids' beds. We tied a bunch of clothes together and hold clothes under there. These are not the clothes that they are wearing now, but hand-me-downs for the next sibling or clothes that they do not yet fit into. All we have to do is lift the mattress and we have full access to the clothes we are looking for. This is an excellent solution for those with long term storage needs. All you have to do is tie a bunch of crates together to make a solid base, then lay the mattress over them.
In fact, milk crates can be used for nearly any furniture. Stack two with a cushion on top and you'll have a chair. Don't skip the cushion, though. The crate does not feel good under your butt. Tie a bunch together on their side and you have a cubby unit for toys. You'll want to adhere it to the wall, though, as it could be prone to tipping.
The only trouble you'll have with milk crates is finding them. It is against the law to use milk crates from operating milk farms. However, if you know of a farm that went out of business, you can see if they'll sell them to you. These are by far the most study crates around. They can be found at yard sales as well. However, you'll want to make sure that the milk farm doesn't want them anymore or you could get into trouble. You can also buy them on Amazon and other stores, but their quality and sturdiness will vary. They're still worth it and an asset in your home.
