Most people have a designated "junk drawer" in their kitchen: a drawer that gets everything that doesn't have a home elsewhere. For some of us, the junk drawer has taken over an entire room. Instead of trying to organize your entire house at the same time, there are certain tricks that you can use in each room of your home to make the space more livable, organize your clutter, and maybe even make it possible to make some extra money and help others with your newfound space. Let's focus on the shared space in the living room and kitchen in order to free up space in your extra bedroom or office.
Let's start in the living room. By its name alone, you know that this room is going to have a lot of activity. Whether you have kids who like to scatter their toys around, or have guests that don't know where the dishwasher is, this room tends to be the first to let people know "People live here!" To help minimize the effects of this, make sure you know what an acceptable mess is. If you follow everyone around each day cleaning up after them, not only will you be exhausted, but your home will lose its appeal. Soon you won't have to worry about a mess, because people would rather just not be there at all. Instead, designate one or two times each day that you clean up. If that means that Cheerios are scattered all over the floor, let them be (this strategy works unless there is a safety hazard or something that will cause long-term damage like a wine spill). When it is time to clean up, have two or three designated storage areas in the main room for blankets, toys, games, and other often-used things. This isn't the place for intricate organization.

Your kitchen, however, should be. Because of the vast number of tools, dishes, and utensils that most kitchens have, you will want to make sure that things are organized well and that you have a system for clean up. If guests put things away in the wrong places, put up signs to the left and right of the sink for "clean" and "dirty" dishes. This will give guests permission not to worry about clean up, and will give you sanity when it comes to finding where Robert put your slotted spoon. When it comes to the cabinets and drawers, containers are your friends. If you have deep cabinets that you can't see everything in at one glance, add pull-out drawers so that you use every available square inch. With some creative organizing, you will find that you have a lot more space available. You can use extra space in the kitchen for some of your more often-used office supplies or toys. If you use trays and file folders to organize your office supplies, you can easily convert your kitchen table into an office in just a few minutes.
